Abstract

The banking sector plays a key role in a country’s economic growth. It provides the lifeblood of the economy i.e. finance, which encourages and facilitates growth across all sectors and thus ensures economic development. The Indian banking industry is among India’s fastest growing industries. The Indian banking industry has undergone major changes and massive growth over the last few years as a result of the first and second generation financial sector reforms. In this context, a study was undertaken to assess the financial performance of SBI, India’s largest public sector bank, and ICICI, India’s largest private sector bank, from 2015-16 to 2019-2020 for the last five years by using the CAMEL approach to measure the performance of banks. The research is focused on secondary data sources, and relevant data were collected from the respective bank’s annual reports for the above- mentioned research period for this reason.
