Famous Artists' Contributions to Minimalism
Abstract
The art, design, music, plus literature worlds are all home to their own unique takes on the abstract minimalism genre. It emerged in the 1960s as a response to Abstract Expressionism.
Artists that practiced minimalism wanted to distance themselves from the emotional and flamboyant styles of Abstract Expressionism, which they saw as distracting from the true purpose of art. In contrast, the works of minimalist painters were characterized by minimal detail. The artist's biography, subject matter, and political or social objective are all stripped away, allowing the work to stand on its own as a pure statement of both truth and beauty. Minimalist art is often referred to as "ABC Art" because of its emphasis on simple forms.
