Study the Ancient Indian Architectural Treatise

  • Mahesh Bhatt

Abstract

The field of architecture flourished in ancient India. This is most obviously seen in the preserved examples of magnificent building and the architectural treatises that have been handed down through the ages. The purpose of this study is to discuss the ancient Indian architectural system, also known as the "Indian System of Architecture," and its treatment of the holy in its design and construction. This article examines Mayamatam architectural manuals. Nagara, Dravida, Besara, and Kalingan (within Nagara) each have their own architectural treatises for their own temples. The Silpratnakosa, Silpapradipa, Silpasastra, Bhubanapradipa, Mayamatam, Visnudharmottara Purana, Silpasarani, and other treatises codified by Silpin provide much information on the geometry and architecture of ancient India.
