Role and Impact of Mass Communication on Sexuality in TV Programs

Abstract

The consequences of sexual material on young people's sexual views, opinions, and behaviours as shown on television as well as other electronic media are a major cause for worry. Sexual content and depictions of sexual behaviour on television have been shown to be on the rise, and studies have shown a correlation between adolescents' watching habits and their sexual behaviour.

This section examines how the media affects the sexual socialisation of today's teenagers and young adults. According to the Sexual Media Practice Model, which relies on the following presumptions: (1) media customers are active participants as well as content producers; (2) the choice and consumption of sexual media is driven by the adolescent's identity and sexually self-concept; (3) the effects of sexually media are cyclical, such that explicit material may be reinforced by subsequent exposure to it. Suggestions for further study are offered, and possible media-related solutions to the problem of unhealthy teenage sexuality are explored.
