Abstract

In the recent future, to meet the difficulties that mobile communication is likely to come across, the wireless system needs to be advanced in many ways. This paper briefly presents the evolution of communication from 1G to 5G and holds a discussion on general heterogeneous architecture followed by a detailed description of various emerging technologies acting as a backbone for fast track implementation of 5G. Technologies such as massive MIMO and its Time Division Duplexing (TDD) based operation, mmWave massive MIMO, and its conceptual model for 5G, Non-Orthogonal  Multiple Access (NOMA) and its transmission mechanism along with 5G new Radio and its types is described. In addition to this, the feasibility and applicability of other technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Blockchain in different 5G based applications such as smart healthcare, smart city, smart grid, etc. are also investigated. Finally, future research areas and existing challenges in these technologies are also presented.
