Abstract

A student internship is an academic endeavour that aims to immerse students to a real work environment to augment and apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. However, due to voluminous data received by organizations providing internship programs, decision-making becomes tedious in selecting qualified applicants for placement. A knowledge-based system using modified Case Based Reasoning (CBR) provides solutions in identifying qualified students. Using a three-tier architecture, the system can be accessed by Higher Education Institutions, Organizations and students using mobile and web applications. The test case has shown the applicability of CBR Retrieval Process in calculating the local and global similarities of students' attributes to the criteria set by organizations. Similarities can be expressed in percentages that give quantitative and empirical bases for decision-making.
