Work-From-Home (WFH) Benefits and Challenges: Evidence from State Higher Education Sector in Sri Lanka

Abstract

The proportion of institutions specially, higher education institutions instigating working-from-home (WFH) or employing adaptable working arrangements has been increasing along with the novel Coronavirus COVID-19. Nevertheless, in Sri Lanka, WFH concept is minimally applied despite its benefits since lack of preparedness and readiness of institutions. WFH concept also engenders work and family constraints, and challenges. Hence, this research investigates the potential benefits and challenges and impact of WFH on work, family and health. The survey carried out among academics from state higher education institutions in Sri Lanka. 360 responses were taken for analysis through google form questionnaire. The research finds that although several constraints underscored, WFH concept glowing firmly. The higher education institutions should device feasible and effective strategies considering the environs by utilizing human resources to provide most apposite and relevant alternative ways of delivering services through WFH. This research also provides several recommendations, in particular, higher education institutions in Sri Lanka.
