Abstract

In this work, a control technique is designed for the speed control of a non linear hybrid electric
vehicle (HEV) which is having a mechanical and electrical subsystem i.e. electronic throttle control
system (ETCS) in cascade configuration. A controller is developed using cascade control loop with
PI as primary and PD as secondary controller (PI-PD). The gains of the proposed controllers named
as CSPI-PD are tuned by Cuckoo Search (CS) technique which minimized the cost function
dependent upon overshoot (OS), integral of absolute error (IAE). Performance is evaluated for speed
profile tracking and disturbance rejection phenomenon. The other controllers evaluated are classical
PID, PID tuned with Cuckoo Search (CS-PID), Ziegler Nichols tuned PID-ZN. It is seen that CSPIPD outperformed other competitive controllers in both abovementioned profiles and presented its
robust nature for HEV speed control.
