Abstract

In process industries, pressure vessels are the most used storage component. The design of the unfired
pressure vessel depends on various types of loads and required to be assured for the structural safety
to avoid any failure. A designer's expertise has always been challenged by optimization techniques
used. In this paper, a primary design based on the selection of appropriate codes and standards is
carried out. The design parameters are optimized using Johnson's Method of optimization for
mechanical components. This optimized design of pressure vessel is analysed using the finite element
method with the help of software packages. The results obtained are found in good agreement with the
analytical calculations.
