Feasibility, Safety and Clinical Outcome of Surgical Repair in Different Clinical Presentation of Inguinal Hernia

Abstract

Hernia may be defined as a protrusion of abdominal viscera outside the abdominal cavity through a natural or acquired defect. The chances of inguinal hernia to develop in individual are 18% with life time risk 24%. To determine the incidence of inguino-scrotal swellings in patients admitted in IMS AND SUM HOSPITAL, Bhubaneswar during the period from July 2017 to June2019. It analyze the age, duration and type of complication at the time of presentation. This study is based on the descriptive cross sectional study of the cases of Inguino-scrotal swellings in IMS and SUM hospital during a period of two years from July 2017 to June 2019.In our study 177 patients belonged to Hernia. 4 were non- hernias. Out of which 26 were direct hernias, 151 were indirect hernias. In our study 47 patients were treated with Herniorrhaphy, 115 were treated with Hernioplasty, 9 underwent reduction with Herniorrhaphy, 6 had to undergo resection and anastamosis with Herniorrhaphy, 2 patients were treated with Exicision. 2 were treated with orchidectomy. Right-sided inguinal swelling (67.40%) is commoner than left side (27.60%). Age is directly proportional to the occurrence of inguinal swelling. Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty has least complications, able to ambulate in the early hours, resume work early and less post- operative discomfort.
