Abstract

Several factors that cause column structure failure include column design that does not take into account the ductility or confinement and poor column detailing so the column performance decreases than the previous planning, besides the planner ignores the concept of "strong columns weak beams". One way to increase column ductility is to retrofit the column by jacketing the column using welded wire mesh (WWM). The research is to determine the effectiveness of WWM as a column restraint material and determine the model of reinforced concrete column stress-strain relationship curves retrofitted by using WWM. Experimental testing used square column with a size of 220 x 220 mm that was retrofitted by WWM Æ2-25 and WWM Æ2-50 with column height = 800 mm. WWM25 column test results showed that compressive strength f’cc = 25.692 MPa, confined strain ecc =0.00525 and ultimate strain ecu  = 0.03798. While WWM50 column test results showed that f’cc = 24.349 MPa, ecc =0.00838 and ecu = 0.03435. The results of experimental theoretical validation of WWM25 column were f’cc deviation = -4.60 %, ecc=-42.62% and ecu =-0.05%, while WWM50 column were f’cc deviation = -4.70 %, ecc=-0.95% and ecu =-10.55%.
