From Tradition to Modernization in Morphological Process of Indigenous Settlement Patterns in Bali, Indonesia

Abstract

The pattern of traditional Balinese settlements is embodied from the philosophy and concept of a community based on religion (Hinduism), digested according to local wisdom of the local community. The pattern of reflection varies where geographical factors contribute to the formation of a form of typology of settlement patterns. The typology of such customary settlement patterns is a place for sustainable living in accordance with idealism, socio-culture, and community behavior. The morphology of the Balinese settlements is like an original face made up with various kinds of cosmetics through a process that leads to adjustments, to changes from its original form. The morphological process can be influenced by internal and external developments. The main issue is morphology has taken place at various levels, and the problem is the degradation of physical and non-physical values. Currentyl, morphology shows the increasingly rapid movement from rural to urban urban settlement patterns, which in certain parts eliminate the existing indigenous typology. The purpose of the study is how is the morphological process of traditional settlements in Bal, between tradition and modernization ? The study shows that it requires an integrated and ongoing effort to understand and take account correctly the battle between tradition and modernization in order to be able to take a stand on each decision making appropriately and correctly.
