Abstract

The paper presents a strategy to improve transient stability of power system by converting operation modes of a series flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) device. In general, the series FACTS device is used to support reactive power to the power system for maintaining system voltage within stable range and reducing transmission power loss. Also, the series FACTS device can linearly generate positive to negative reactive power. The paper proposes a method to change the operation modes from positive to negative reactive power generation in order to improve transient stability when severe fault is applied to power system. The performance of the proposed method is verified by real-time simulation by using real time digital simulator (RTDS).
