Design and Simulation of 8W GaN HEMT Power Amplifier for Telemetry Applications
Abstract
GaN HEMT Power Amplifiers has a wide applications in base-stations, SATCOM & telemetry applications. All these applications would require high efficiency power amplifiers. In order to transfer the data at faster rate in a remote place where it is difficult to use coaxial cables and wire and also to satisfy the trade-off between PAE and output power, GaN HEMT device with high efficiency has been considered for telemetry applications. Telemetry and tracking systems are the backbone of a communication system especially in aircraft field, biomedical field, satellite communication and RADAR applications which needs an excellent high efficient power amplifiers to boost the signal above the threshold level to transfer the complete information to the receiver end. A high efficiency power amplifier is obtained using GaN HEMT technology by operating it in class-AB mode at 2.3 GHz frequency. The forward gain and the power output measured from EM simulation is found to be 13.15 dB and 38.15 dBm at 2.3 GHz frequency. The PAE measured is found to be 62.19% at 2.3 GHz frequency. The proposed power amplifier design is simulated using Applied Wave Research (AWR) tool.
