Sustainable Development of Structural Joint made using High Volume Fly-Ash concrete

Abstract

This study was conducted is to carry out the research of the seismic performance of exterior beam-column joints with substantial volume of fly-ash in concrete, containing cement was being replaced by 50% of fly-ash. To find the effect of concrete with HVFA and its role in sustainable development, eight experiments were conducted by four different series under reversed lateral loading and sustained axial load. All the specimen’s joints were exhibited the similar failure mechanism, which involved some minor cracks was observed along the height of the column and concrete crushing at the beam-column joints. To this end, parametric studies like hysteretic response (lateral strength capacity), maximum load displacement, the ratio of ductility, reduction of stiffness and energy absorption were obtained for all the tested specimens. Finally, it was found that the specimens made with HVFA concrete are able to attain higher loads than the controlled specimens. The experiments show that seismic performance of beam-column joints made with HVFA concrete is less at earlier stages and it gains excessive strength at later stage than the conventional concrete. By Utilizing Fly-ash it will increase the sustainability of the structure while reducing the carbon emissions and providing building with sufficient seismic performance.
