Performance Optimization of a complex Virtual Private Network Architecture by Means of Adaptive Compression
Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an indispensable part of the internet world. This can be used to interconnect two networks using the cost effective shared medium of internet. Performance of data transfer via VPN tunnel is impacted by various factors such as data format, compression algorithm, internet bandwidth etc. VPN provide security at the cost of performance; hence data specific cost benefit analysis is essential to choose the optimal architecture. Packet inspection and the correlated decision of data compression shall be a better choice before transferring the data. An algorithm of selective compressionof input data by predicting data compressibility, network bandwidth availability and compute resource utilization is being proposed which shall be self-adaptive to these factors so as to enhance the data transfer performance via secured site to site VPN tunnel.Empirical measurements show that data transfer performance improves by 60 to 80 % at higher network bandwidth availability when contrasted to standard VPN configurations.
