A Comprehensive Review of Kannada Handwritten Document Recognition

Abstract

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a process of automatic recognition of characters and numerals in optically scanned documents digitized into text. Most of the researchers have worked on OCR systems to recognize the handwritten document. The various commercial OCR systems are available, but there are only a handful of work on Kannada handwritten documents. In this paper, we emphasize on the studies and work related to Kannada Handwritten Character Recognition(KHCR). The study divulges different types of segmentation techniques, feature sets, and classifiers that are employed to recognize handwritten Kannada characters. It also addresses the challenges and issues involved in the related research having peculiarities of Kannada script, a language spoken by over 70 million people.
