PON is an broadband access network that provides energy saving high data rate network over long reach distance and considered as most promising solution for the future smart world applications such as industrial, business, e-services, education, research, health, mobile backhaul and residential. But the presence of distinct backups and high cost of operating data centers generates the shortcoming and reduces the feasibility, quality of service (QoS) as well as increase the latency in PON. For this cloud computing plays an important role to solve all these limitations. Cloud computing is an emerging technology which provides an innovative way to access, store and exchange data in a network. In this paper, an energy saving PON with the provision of cloud services, to support large number numbers of optical network units (ONUs) at high bit rate for ensuring low latency and guarantee QoS at end users has been reviewed. Further, this paper shows the provision of cloud services over PON generations viz. ethernet passive optical network (EPON), gigabit passive optical network (GPON), next generation passive optical network stage 1 (NG-PON1) and next generation passive optical network stage 2 (NG-PON2). Furthermore, performance of NG-PON2 based cloud access time & wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) along with the recent developments are studied in detail. Also, key open issues and applications of cloud access PONs for smart world are discussed.

Keywords: Passive optical network (PON), Ethernet passive optical network (EPON), Gigabit passive optical network (GPON), Next generation passive optical network stage 1 (NG-PON1), Next generation passive optical network stage 2 (NG-PON2), Time & wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON).</p>}, number={5}, journal={International Journal of Control and Automation}, author={Anu Sheetal, Meet Kumari, Reecha Sharma,}, year={2019}, month={Dec.}, pages={437 - 442} }
