There are several elements of cinema which supplement to the vibrancy of narrative structure and can elevate the artistic texture of content all together to a different level, both from the point of view of aesthetics as well as entertainment. This research paper aims to study the metaphorical perspective of visual approach on the narrative structure of cinema with reference to Santosh Sivan’s period film ‘Asoka’. The film has been a talking point among the film fraternity for its thrilling visual guise. The film tells the interesting piece of history about the life journey of Emperor ‘Asoka’ of Maurya dynasty, who ruled most of the Indian subcontinent in 3rd century BC. The director and cinematographer of the movie, Santosh Sivan was honored with two reputed awards, in the category of best cinematography, for the movie. A film of such a large scale which has been shot under very difficult circumstances, has a very distinct flavor to most of its cinematic elements without incorporating any visual effects. This research study argues that there exists an underlying metaphorical layer, embedded with the visuals of the movie.  Therefore, the researcher felt the importance of analyzing the visual components of ‘Asoka’ like; locations, compositions, lighting, visual objects, weathers etc. and has attempted to find the  symbolism in them, which has complimented to the built up of storyline. This study produces worthwhile information about the correlation of aesthetical narrative with cinematography and visual similes. The research paper also establishes the fact that visual metaphors can shape up the linear content of cinema to an enriched and artistic form. ER -
