Abstract

This study aims to identify the course book used by the first-grade students of elementary schools in Indonesia. It focuses on reading and writing materials. This study uses the qualitative method with content analysis. The research data were collected through document analyses. The instrument used in this study was a document analysis sheet which was arranged based on the underlying theories about content, language, graphics, and presentation. The validity used in this study is semantic validity. The reliability used in this study is stability and reproducibility. The data analysis technique used in this study is the content analysis scheme. The results show that this course book has fulfilled the criteria for content, language, graphics, and presentation to teach reading and writing materials to elementary school students. However, there are some components which are still incomplete, such as the content component which is not systematic in conveying reading and writing materials, so for students who cannot read and write, this book is difficult to use. The missing language component in this book is the accuracy of the use of punctuation and symbols. The graphics components that must be improved are the layout that is not dynamic, the proportion of pictures with non-dynamic sentences and the typography used which is too small.
