The Effectiveness of the Use of Pancasila Based on Academic Writing Textbooks to the Attitude of Nationalism of Muhammadiyah University Students in Central Java, Indonesia

Abstract

This study aimed to learn how the effectiveness of the use of Pancasila-based textbook towards the nationalism attitude of students at Muhammadiyah University in Central Java, Indonesia. The study was conducted with a quasi-experimental method. The subjects of this study were 5th semester students with a sample of 40 students who were divided into two classes namely the control class and the experimental class. Class 5A was treated as an experimental class with the use of Pancasila based textbooks and Class 5B as a control class without using Pancasila based textbooks. The data were collected using a test instrument in the form of written questions.  The data obtained were analyzed with the t-test formula. The results showed that: (1) The use of Pancasila-based textbooks was effective in increasing students' understanding of nationalism attitudes. This was evidenced by the acquisition of t-value of (11,112) was greater than t-table (1,729) with a significance level of 0.05; (2) Lectures without Pancasila-based textbooks had not been proven effective in increasing students' understanding of nationalism attitudes. This was shown from the results of calculations with the t-test, the t-value obtained (0.745) was smaller than t-table (1.729). With a significance level of 0.05. Thus, it was concluded that the use of Pancasila-based textbooks proved to be more effective than lectures without Pancasila-based textbooks in increasing understanding of the nationalism attitude of students at Muhammadiyah University in Central Java, Indonesia. This study provided insights on students’ nationalism attitude, particularly in the Indonesian context, discussed implications for developing textbook in higher education institutions, and offered recommendations for future research.
