Abstract

This paper presents the performance of road embankment slope stability on the soft ground treated with prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) using numerical methods. A comparative analysis between the prediction through the finite element method (FEM) and measured was performed to verify the permeability ratio of smear effect. The influence of mesh (fine, medium and coarse) on finite element analysis (FEA) is also studied. Based on the plane strain model, it is found that the permeability ratio of the smear effect with 4 is similarly with measured. The density of the mesh was found to have no significant effect on the FEA. Analysis of the performance of the embankment slope stability demonstrated that the safety factor is decreased with increasing height.
