A Review on the Structural Behavior of Cold-Formed Steel Beam-Column Joints

Abstract

The use of cold-formed steel (CFS) in a light steel frame design can become a popular choice for the Industrialized Building System (IBS), by expanding the steel construction concept to house building. However, detailed studies on the behavior of joints for primary structures, in particular, the connection between the CFS beam and the column, are missing. The experimental and analytical studies done so far on CFS beam-column joint have been reviewed in this article. In short, the CFS column beam connection results in premature buckling of the web, which in turn reduces the energy dissipation capacity of the connection. The article also focuses on the techniques for increasing the rigidity of cold-formed steel beam-column connections.
