Wideband Cooperative Spectrum Sensing In Cognitive Radio Network

Abstract

Technological development has been increasing day by day to meet the expectations of the people for their smart life. Cognitive Radio (CR) is one of the needed solution to improve the utilization of wireless spectrum for the next generation of wireless networks. Major functionalities of CR are Spectrum sensing, Spectrum management, Spectrum decision and Spectrum handoff. Spectrum sensing plays the vital role in cognitive radio network to identify the availability of unoccupied channel for improving the spectrum’s utilization. The paper focused on the Spectrum sensing methods in CR network. The conventional spectrum sensing techniques includes Energy detection, Cyclostationary detection etc., achieves maximum probability of detection only at high SNR value of the primary user, the probability of false alarm is also high and it takes longer time to sense the available unoccupied channel. To overcome these issues, a novel wideband algorithm termed as Multiband joint detection technique is proposed in this paper. Multiband detection scans more than one frequency band at a time instant in parallel and also exploits the variable thresholding. Both existing and the proposed spectrum sensing techniques are simulated and analyzed in MATLAB platform. Simulation result shows that the proposed spectrum sensing techniques achieves maximum probability of detection at low SNR value of the primary user, unnecessary false alarm rate is reduced, thereby leads to high throughput for the secondary user. The proposed algorithm runs at a faster rate simultaneously in multiple frequency bands. So, the sensing time required per user is greatly reduced. The proposed techniques approaches maximum probability of detection at low SNR value, whereas existing methods needs high SNR value to achieve the maximum detection of primary user.
