Abstract

This paper shows the strength and behaviour of the cold-formed steel built-up column sections comprising of two channels linked back to back with the batten plates. The test results were taken from the available literature. The sections presented in the literature were modelled in the software ABAQUS. The material properties such as yield stress, young’s modulus were included in the developed sections. The imperfection factors also were included and the size of the sections has meshed with 5mm x 5mm. The boundary conditions were provided as pin-ended by allocating the appropriate displacement and rotation at both ends of the built-up column. The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the sections and deformed shapes of the sections were obtained. The design strengths were also calculated by using the direct strength method and effective width method as per North American specifications. By comparison, the test results were matched well with the numerical results and theoretical analysis. The deformed shapes were also matched. Therefore, the test results have been validated with numerical analysis using the ABAQUS software.
