Abstract

Background: Prevalence of undernutrition among preschool children in urban slum areas is very high in
in India and worldwide inspite many health programmes and nutrition supplementation by governments
as it is caused by the lack of mothers knowledge on factors affecting nutritional status of preschool
children.

factors affecting nutritional status of preschool children and to find the association of knowledge level of
mothers of preschool children with selected sociodemographic variables.
Material and Methods: Study was carried out in six anganwadis of urban slum areas of selected city at
Maharashtra. One group pre-test, post-test design was appropriate to achieve the desired objective of the
study. 137 mothers of preschool children were selected by Non-probability purposive sampling technique.
Data was collected by interview schedule using pre-tested structured knowledge questionnaire on factors
affecting nutritional status of preschool children. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data
analysis.
Results: Results shows that mothers knowledge scores in post-test (23.8, SD=4.8) was significantly
higher than their pre-test knowledge scores (18.8, SD = 5.1) with paired ‘t’ test value of 15.16 and p
value was less than the 0.05 and it shows that planned teaching programme improved the mothers
knowledge on factors affecting nutritional status of preschool children.
Conclusion: Planned teaching programme on knowledge of mothers regarding factors affecting
nutritional status of preschool children was successful to improve the knowledge of mothers.
