Abstract

The cost of maintenance can be reduced in three-phase Wound-Field synchronous motors by the early detection of faults. The development of 3-Ø Internal faults in synchronous motors lead to system failures and degradation in the performance of the machine. An un-noticed stator turn-turn fault will result in a complete shutdown of the machine. So it is compulsory to detect stator turn level faults at an early stage. In this research paper a new algorithm using wavelet analysis for the identification and detection of stator incipient faults is presented. The detection and identification of a faulty phase is done by making a comparison of fault indices with a fixed threshold. The residue energy values of fourth level detail coefficients are calculated which are used in defining fault index. The proposed method is verified by using experimental data. Results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
