Abstract

One of the main issues faced by an international joint venture (IJV) in transitional economies is how to acquire more knowledge from its foreign parent company (i.e., knowledge acquisition) for enhanced competitiveness of the IJV. Drawing on the knowledge-based view, this paper proposes absorptive capacity, transfer mechanisms, and knowledge management practices, as the knowledge acquisition determinants of IJVs. In addition, it suggests that an IJV’s competitiveness is an outcome of its knowledge acquisition. Using a sample of 122 oil and gas IJVs in Algeria, findings reveal that absorptive capacity and transfer mechanisms are positively related to an IJV’s knowledge acquisition. However, the determinant of knowledge management practices is insignificant. In addition, the findings show that an IJV’s knowledge acquisition is significantly related to its competitiveness.
