Abstract

The self-efficacy of a teacher could influence the pedagogical skills as well as the holistic development of the pupils. In the context of the teaching of English as a second language in Malaysia, teachers’ low self-efficacy is frequently associated with the inefficiency on the teaching of the language. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the efficacy beliefs of Malaysian preschool teachers, their perceived English language proficiency and the use of teaching strategies in the teaching of English as a second language in Malaysia. This study involved 444 preschool teachers from five states in Malaysia: Pulau Pinang which represents the north zone, Kelantan which represents the east zone, Selangor which represents the central zone, Johor which represents the south zone and Sarawak which represents the east Malaysia zone. The instrument used consists of four sections; Section (A) Background of Teachers, Section (B) Teacher’s Self-Efficacy, Section (C) Teacher’s English Language Proficiency (D) Teacher’s Teaching Strategies. Descriptive statistic (min, standard deviation, frequency and percentage) is applied to analyse and present the findings of the study. The results showed that the teacher’s self-efficacy in the teaching of English as a second language is high (M= 3.83, SP= .30), while the teacher’s English language proficiency was marked as average (M= 3.20, SP .62). The teacher’s teaching strategies in the teaching of English as a second language is at average level (M= 3.30, SP= .48).
