Application of Internet of Things for Smart Precision Farming: Solutions and Challenges

Abstract

Due to significant advantages and growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, it gains more attention in much smart monitoring based real-time projects. The smart precision farming is one such application of IoT to automate the process of farming to improve the farm productivity and saves resources like power, water, etc. IoT provides a new dimension in the area of the smart farming domain from the last decade. IoT application in the domain of agriculture should be transformative for the human beings, as it is noticed that the conditions like excess weather, exhausting lands, and depreciating soil leads to ecosystems failures across the world. The ecosystems play the significant role in farming to produce food production harder. This review article presents survey on application IoT in smart agriculture domain, advantages of using IoT in smart agriculture, and general challenges of IoT in smart precision farming. Additionally, the study over the various precision agriculture methods using the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and IoT enabled WSNs presented. The review of all recent works for smart precision agriculture is systematically described in this article with their comparative analysis. The outcome of this article is the current research problems of using IoT enabled WSNs for scalable and efficient smart precision farming.
