Assessment of efficacy of epidural steroid injection in lumbar disc herniation patients

Abstract

Background: Lumbar disc herniation or peripheral foraminal stenosis and has considerable economic significance. The present study assessed epidural steroid injection in lumbar disc herniation patients.

Materials & Methods: The present study was conducted on 68 patients of lumbar disc herniation’s of both genders. Patients were divided into 2 groups of 34 each. Group I patients were treated with NSAIDS and group II patients received epidural steroid injection. All patients were assessed for pain using visual analogue scale (VAS) on 1st month, 6th month and 1 year.

Results: Out of 68 patients, males were 40 and females were 28. The mean VAS score after 1 month in group I was 7.12, in group II was 7.04, at 6 months in group I was 6.45 and in group II was 5.12 and at 1 year in group I was 3.25 and in group II was 2.11. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).
