Stakeholders’ Perspective on the Perceived Causes of Building Collapse in Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract

The increasing rate of building collapse in recent times has become a major concern to all stake holders in Nigeria, as many lives are lost and huge investments wasted. This menace poses a threat to public health if it remains unchecked. In an attempt to find a lasting solution to this problem, it is important to investigate and a have good understanding of the root causes. The perceived causes of building collapse in Lagos State, Nigeria are critically examined from stakeholders’ perspectives in this study. Structured questionnaire was used to seek the industry stakeholders’ opinions and unstructured interview were used to consolidate their opinions for the data collection. Responses were analyzed and ranked using Relative Importance Index (R.I.I) method. The study identified ten critical causes of building collapse in Lagos State, Nigeria. Based on the results obtained in this study, recommendations were made to prevent the future occurrence of this menace.
