A Study on the Socio Demographic and Obstetric Profile of the MTP Seekers among the Economically Weaker Ever Married Women of Guwahati City
Abstract
The present study was carried out to study the obstetric profile of the MTP seekers of the economically backward ever married women in Guwahati city and to assess the indicators of MTP vis a vis the socio demographic factors. Out of the 300 women in the study 138(46%) has undergone MTP. The MTP rate has been found to be the highest among the women in the age group 25-34 (70.3%). A high percentage of 63% lived in joint families. 33.3% of the MTP seekers were illiterate. 91 women (65.9%) had been pregnant more than twice. 123(89.1%) of MTPs were carried out before 12 weeks of the gestational age. Number of MTP seekers were found to be highest (43.5%) for the women with more than 2 children and gradually decreased with lesser number of children and for women with no children.11 women had undergone MTP more than twice, 18 had undergone twice, 46 had undergone once and 63 had no history of MTP. 43 MTP seekers belonged to Hindu religion which is higher than the proportion of women belonging to other religions (Muslim, Christian and others). Out of the 138 MTP seekers, 74(53.6%) are non-users of contraceptive, 21(15.2%) has undergone MTP due to medical reasons like miscarriage, health of the respondent or the unborn child or fallopian tube rupture, etc. and 43(31.2%) had to undergo MTP because of contraceptive failure.
