Settlement Operation and Interest of Indigenous People of Assam: A Socio-Legal Analysis

Abstract

Settlement Operation is conducted in the soil of Assam to settle the landless people who are occupying certain land. Government of the State is responsible to give protection and establishment to the people within their territorial limits. Though such settlement is conducted as per the provision of chapter III of The Assam Land and Revenue Regulation,1886. However the process is not fully free from laxity. Discretion in distribution of land, unequal distribution of land, need of the indigenous people etc., are some of the area of discussion in operating fair settlement of land. For the greater interest of the indigenous people of Assam in the process and practice of settlement operation amendment in the existing process is the need of the time.
