Abstract

" The word Humanity is derived from the Latin word Humanitas , which means human nature or human behaviour".

Sankardev , the greatest man and the philosopher of Assam was a humanist in real sense. He had a completely different concept of humanity which is only based on religion and spiritualism . He believed that human beings are recognized on the basis of humanity. It is the only reason why humans are different from animals. The main ideology of humanity was to teach the value of oneness and establish unity, happiness and brotherhood among every human being. Sankardev who was also a social reformer tried to remove the discriminations based on caste, creed, gender , religion etc  and establish equality in the society. He always strived for the welfare of the society for which he propagated scientific religion and revolted against the unscientific beliefs , superstitions, evil rites etc and tried to demolish it from  human society. Sankardev believed in one religion which included worshipping human beings and treating every living organism equally is the greatest worship of all . So he raised his voice against animal sacrifice in the 15th century itself which is a sign of violence and cruelty.  Thus according to Sankardev , humanity should be creative enough to encourage the individual to help in reforming the society.
