Abstract

Before the development of modern system of medicine traditional system of medicines were used for 100 of
years and are still in use today. Traditional medicines are synthesized and have therapeutic experience from one
generation to other and practicing by physicians of traditional system of medicine. Hyperlipidemia has been
ranked as one of the greatest risk factors contributing to prevalence and severity of coronary heart
diseases.Hyperlipidemia was easily induced by oral atherogenic diet. In atherogenic diet induced
hyperlipidemic model, the rats receiving treatment with Pterygota alata (Roxb) bark extracts showed significant
reduction in total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), very high density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low density
lipoprotein (LDL) and elevation of high density lipoprotein (HDL). Pterygota alata (Roxb) was found to possess
significant hypolipidemic activity. Toxicity study was also performed.
