Abstract

Extremism refers to ideology, attitude or behaviour which goes beyond the limits of moderation   or exceeds appropriate limits and conditions of a matter such as relating to religious, political and social matters. The phenomenon of extremism relates to terrorism, Daesh, ISIS and so on. The issue of extremism needs to be effectively dealt with and demands serious attention from the authorities, otherwise political stability and national peace and security will be adversely affected. One of the methods which can be used to curb the spread of extremism among society is spiritual approach in counseling. Hence the purpose of this research is to identify the spiritual approach in counseling in dealing with extremist cases. This is a qualitative research using descriptive analysis.  Research results find that spiritual approach in dealing with extremist cases may be carried out at all stages of counseling, that is, of building rapport, of exploration, of identifying problems and of closure.  At all the above levels, the skills of oral response such as questioning, confrontation, reflection or self-reckoning and summarizing may be done, particularly in the process of identifying the causes of involvement with extremism. The spiritual approach may be adopted to enable the client to withdraw from or no longer engage in extremism. It is hoped that research results can contribute to counseling knowledge and skills to enable the counselor to provide more effective service and help stem the spread of extremism in this country.
