Relational Social Capital and Economic Empowerment of Fisher folks: A study on Marine Community in Uttarakannada

Abstract

The fishing industry in India has grown from a fishing-based livelihood to a prosperous fisheries industry in the post-independence period. Hence, it is considered as one of the most promising sectors to concentrate on, for the growth of the nation’s economy. Unfortunately, the socio-economic advantages connected with this transition have not yet penetrated to the small scale fisher folks in India and the plight of these small scale fisher folk, who are a majority in that community, is still in doom. They are struggling to make their both ends meet. The present paper examines the role of relational social capital among these fisher folk in empowering them economically. The responses were gathered from 377 fisherfolk from the Uttarakannada district who were selected using random sampling. The hypothesis was formulated and tested using the data gathered from the sample population and with the help of various statistical tools. Findings demonstrated significant impact of relational social capital on the economic empowerment of fisherfolk in Uttarakannada.
