Abstract

In several applications high power loads connected with three-phase four-wire systems are unbalanced and non-linear. This load unbalance causes the system to draw unbalanced current from the supply which is rich in harmonic content. This paper investigates a controller design strategy with shunt active power filters applied to an unbalanced non linear load for the compensation of current harmonics and reactive power. The paper analyses the harmonic content in source and load current using MATLAB SIMULINK for a three phase 4 wire system connected with unbalanced non-linear load. Simulation studies have been carried out with a passive filter, shunt active filter and a hybrid filter. It has been observed that with the connection of hybrid passive-shunt active filters the harmonic distortion could be brought within the permissible limit for both load and the source current.
