Two Stage Sintering of 0.5 Wt% Cuo Doped 3y-Tzp
Abstract
One of the many factors that influences the mechanical properties and ageing properties of Yttria-Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals ceramics is the sintering parameters. In this research, the mechanical properties of 0.5 wt% CuO doped 3Y-TZP produced via two-stage sintering with first stage sintering temperature ranging from 1400°C to 1550°C followed by second stage sintering temperature ranging from 1250°C to 1350°C will be compared to the conventional single stage sintering schedule (2 hours holding time). Based on this research, it is revealed that depending on the schedule, two-stage sintering is beneficial in enhancing its mechanical properties such as bulk density (≥ 97% T.D.), Vickers hardness ( ≥ 12 GPa), Young’s modulus ( ≥ 210 GPa) and fracture toughness ( ≥ 5 MPam1/2) compared to samples sintered via conventional single stage sintering schedule. This study also revealed on 0.5 wt% CuO doped 3Y-TZP, the grain growth can be suppressed via two-stage sintering which leads to denser ceramic consequently leads to tougher 3Y-TZP.
