Abstract

The study aimed to find out the effectiveness of the proposed modules as an instructional material in Chemistry 12  particularly in the topics acids, bases and salts and oxidation-reduction reaction and to evaluate if there is significant difference in the student performance in the pretest-post test results of both experimental and control groups.  The research instrument used was a written test developed by the researcher following the Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives. The Pre Test- Post Test experimental research design was used to find out the level of achievement of the students. The sample used for this study were first year Engineering Chemistry class of  where  40 samples was chosen randomly assigned to both the experimental and the control group. The experimental group was exposed to the modular  self –instructional approach of teaching, learning the lesson on their own pace, while the control group learned the same lesson normally from their teacher utilizing the traditional lecture discussion methods of teaching. The study revealed that the experimental group showed a remarkable improvement on their level of performance as compared to the control group after utilizing the modules. The F-Test or Analyses of Variance was used to get the significant difference of the pretest scores and the post test at 0.05 level of significance. They performed significantly higher after the introduction to Module I as shown by the computed F-value of 255.131 which is greater than the tabular value F= 4.08.  The result also shows that  the experimental  group perform better after the introduction to  Module II with a F-503.15  of which is greater than the tabular value F= 4.08. The proposed modules in chemistry are effective instructional material in the teaching of acid – base reaction and oxidation-reduction among first year engineering students of Isabela State University.
