Abstract

Advanced image editing tools available today, makes it amazingly easy to modify the image content, or to produce a new image, so it no more requires expertise for altering and falsifying the image content. Even those of us with the sharpest eyes may easily be fooled with fake images and this is one of the major problems in courtrooms and in press publications. Also, image plagiarism is considered to be a major hurdle in journal publications too. As counterfeit images are increasing day by day, strategies that permit the remaking of the history of a digital image so as to check its honesty and to survey its quality is of dire importance. Digital Image Forensics is a spic and span research domain and it broadly divided into active forensics and passive forensics. Passive forensics verifies the authenticity of the image by analysing its contents and structure. Among the passive techniques, copy move forgery is actively researched and the goal of this study is to give a far-reaching outline of the cutting edge in the area of copy-move fabrication/forgery detection and localization.

In this paper, block-based and key-point-based methods widely adopted by the research community to detect and localize copy move forgery are analysed. Besides, the performance metrics and the data sets created and used for evaluating the performance of CMFD methods is discussed. Finally, the paper concludes with directions to new researchers in this field.
