Abstract

There exist many encryption and authentication algorithm modes today. This paper seeks to compare two of the most well-known and widely used industrial standards the CCM mode and the GCM mode of encryption and authentication. Both these modes use an underlying block cipher. This paper assumes that the underlying block cipher is AES (Advanced Encryption standard). A detailed overview of both the modes of operation is given. A comparison is also established between these modes of operation on various key parameters and features that include performance and area among other aspects.

Keywords: AES, GCM, CCM, CBC-MAC.
