Pictograms: An Effective Tool in Disease Management

Abstract

Patient compliance and adherence to medication is a challenging task particularly among elderly with impaired vision and cognitive defects. Health literacy is also a concern and healthcare team often strive to educate the patients on their disease and drugs. Communication tools such as pictograms, may help in better understanding the prescription rather than lengthy textual information’s. While pictograms developed must be simple and should not create any ambiguity. Pictograms from FIP and USP have been widely used and benefitted the patient community. With the advent of technology, development of PictoRX software by FIP further added benefits to the health literacy.
