Abstract

Virtualization act as a backbone under cloud computing. Performance overhead in virtualization layer impacts the research area in High Performance computing with Cloud and reviewed by many researchers. Current development and deployment with OS virtualization based on containerization overcome the problem of performance overhead via providing a very lightweight virtualization layer for computing instances in terms of storage, memory, CPU and much more. Containerization technologies such as Docker has been widely used, especially for HPC and cloud computing. This paper presents a basic feasibility and performance overhead reduction study using Docker and evaluates the performance of containers vs virtual machine (VM) usage. We have represented the containers maturity over years and the performance issues resolution via enabling container images suitable to run for HPC systems. The results focus on a promising approach for portability, availability and scalability.
