Abstract

OBJECTIVE:  The objective of this study is to find the effect of vibration and supplement therapy in the management of post-menopausal osteopenia among women

BACKGROUND: Osteopenia and osteoporosis are common conditions encountered in the postmenopausal women. This becomes the underlying cause which increases the fracture risk among these women. A structured therapy which when initiated at the early stage of the disease could help reduce fracture risk and positively improve the quality of life among post-menopausal women.

METHODOLOGY: This study was an experimental study, pre- posttest type. A total of 152 post-menopausal women between the age group of 45-55 years were screened using quantitative ultrasound. Women with osteopenia without any associated co morbidities were included for this study. 30 women reported to have osteopenia with their T scores between -1 to -2.5. HbA1c, Mean blood glucose (MBG) and Frax score for fracture risk assessment of the subjects were assessed and the subjects were excluded if they had Diabetes, Hypertension, previous fractures, severe osteoporosis, those under medication or hormonal therapy and other systemic co morbidities . 30 subjects fulfilled the inclusion criteria and was randomly divided into Group A n=15 (Vit D and calcium supplement therapy) and Group B n=15 ( Low intensity Vibration Therapy(LIVT) with supplement). They were subjected to therapy for a period of 6 months. Outcomes measures used were Serum calcium, serum Vitamin D and Mini osteoporosis quality of life questionnaire.
