Abstract

Accident potential and safety potential is assessed by road safety audit which helps to create new road schemes and also improvement and maintenance schemes for the existing road facilities. The goal of auditing is to recognize accident-prone areas from the accident data collected, to analyze the impact of roadway, geometric and traffic conditions and to develop a statistical relationship between the rate of accidents and factors resulting the accidents. The aim of the study is the examine the road in the particulars of the safety measures, road scenario, recognize inadequacies, improving design aspects, and recommend the alleviating and preventive measures for the chose segment of the road for audit. The main intention of the study is to reduce the number of accidents, severity of accidents, and the necessity of costly corrective works. In this study, a 10km stretch of road was analyzed from Elements Mall at NH-44 in Bangalore. A detailed analysis on National Highway-44 has been carried out by considering safety and geometric design aspects. Five years accident data is analyzed and spot speed studies are carried out for every 2km stretch which resulted in identifying accident-prone location.
