Stress Coping Strategies Adopted By Banking Professionals: Public Vs Private Banks

Abstract

As the banking sector is becoming more challenging, complex and demanding, the prevalence of stress is evident among the banking professionals. The study attempts to compare the stress coping strategies used by public and private banking professionals. The study was conducted on 480 respondents comprised of 240 each from public and private banks in National Capital Region, Delhi. The study concludes that when confronted with stress, the private banking professionals adopt active coping, turns to religion, positive reinterpretation, restraint coping, acceptance, focus on emotions, denial to cope, mental disengagement, behavioural disengagement and sense of humour coping strategies more as compared to public banking professionals. Whereas when public banking professionals are confronted with stress, they give more emphasis on planning, seek more social support for instrumental reasons, seek more social support for emotional reasons and suppression of competing activities coping strategies as compared to private banking professionals.
