A Critical Review on Hybrid Polymer Composites: In the Context of Reinforcement and Wear

Abstract

The critical issues faced by engineering applications are physio-mechanical properties and wear of hybrid polymer composites (HPCs). This manuscript aims to summarize the researches carried out on fiber, particulate reinforced polymer composites, industrial wastes and its application in polymer composites, abrasion as well as erosion wear, and systematic design of experiment by various investigators. It has been found that few studies were conducted to investigate three-body abrasive wear behavior of a ceramic-filled HPCs as compared to two body. The effect of particulate fillers on the erosion characteristics of hybrid composites had hardly received any research attention even though the effect of fillers as compared to the matrix modification is more vital. The present literature review suggests the requirement of an in-depth research on the various methods and theoretical models implemented for the prediction of the wear behavior of the composites along with investigation into its micro-structure.
