Abstract

Extending the network life time is a difficult task, as the resource constrained embedded devices are connected to the Internet. The existing research works are concentrated on shortest path to reach the destination, reach the destination with less timing to lengthen the lifespan of the network. However, the congestion is a crucial fact, which directly affects the lifespan of the network. So, this paper proposes congestion aware energy efficient routing (CAEE-RPL) protocol to lengthen the network lifespan. The CAEE-RPL considers the metrics buffer index, hop count and remaining energy to avoid bottleneck problem nearer to the sink. The experiment was performed on COOJA simulator supported by Contiki operating system. The effectiveness of CAEE-RPL is especially in comparison to RPL's and FL-RPL's. The effectiveness of CAEE-RPL increases the life of the network by 12 %.
